City Directories and History: R&R has divided the 1938 SCDOT map of Georgetown County into (36) sectional maps. Many of the individually listed schools and churches shown on this section are pictured. However, in many cases, the individual site also has its own post on R&R, which often provides added information and image. Be wise and use the search function to locate all of the entries for this and other homeplace listings.
(Pleasant Hill Middle School, Carvers Bay School) Pleasant Hill Consolidated School (opened 1938) is a representative example of school architecture in South Carolina during the 1930s. It is exceptional in that the site contains not only a consolidated grammar and high school, but also a gymnasium/auditorium, a cannery, and a home economics/farm-shop classroom building. These buildings exemplify the importance placed on practical education. Pleasant Hill Consolidated School is made up of three one-story brick buildings connected by two covered walkways. The three buildings were the grammar school, auditorium/gymnasium (central block), and high school.
The central block, a front gable rectangular structure, has a gabled porch which projects from the building. The porch has three round arches; the center arch is larger than the flanking arches. Each arch has decorative detailing in brick and limestone. Two double doors with Palladian fanlights lead into the buildings. Both schools are u-shaped. The cannery and home economics/farm-shop buildings are located behind the high school. Interior detailing on the buildings in preserved throughout. The schools and gymnasium/auditorium have beaded-board wainscoting and ceilings, hardwood floors, and original doors with transoms. The gymnasium/auditorium contains a stage, and the original fixed wooden bleachers. Listed in the National Register April 30, 1998. [Courtesy of the SC Dept. of Archives and History]
