City Directories and History: “Annandale is the name of a region in the Scottish border country and also the name of an old plantation on the North Santee in Georgetown County. In Scotland it is the home territory of Clan Johnston. Andrew Johnstone, owner of the plantation, gave his property this name. Other plantations in Georgetown County of Scottish origin are Kinloch, Caledonia, and Dirleton. Kinloch was named for Francis Kinloch and Caledonia (Latinized name for Scotland) was the home of the Scottish Nesbitt family for many years. Dirleton was named for Dirleton Castle, ancestral Scottish seat of the Heriot family.
Keithfield, Bannockburn, and Ross Dhu are also plantations in this region with Scottish-derived names. Keithfield took its name from John Keith* a name reminiscent of Sir Robert Keith, Marischal of Scotland, who commanded a troop of horsemen which fought gallantly at Bannockburn. Bannockburn, owned by the Alston family, was so named because the terrain resembled that of the site of the famous Scottish victory over the English in 1314. Ross Dhu was owned by Captain William Ancrum who named it for an ancestral home in Scotland.”
