City Directories and History: This small dwelling is representative of a simple farmer’s tenant or workman’s home, from the 1910s. A style home often associated with African American farm laborers across much of the South.
Though this small house may appear to have been superior living quarters in the early 20th century, it truly reflects two centuries of minimal housing for African American slaves as well as freedman. Click on the two Thread links to see other examples of historic housing for low-country S.C.’s African American farm population.
