City Directories and History: This 1927 home of Paul H. Rogers had addition and renovations over the years but was originally deisgned by architect Franklin Gordon, and updated by Segars Construction Co., in 2001.
Additional information: The house was built in 1927 for Rogers and was designed by architect Franklin Gordon of Charlotte, North Carolina. Paul Hamilton Rogers, nephew of James Lide Coker (1837-1918), graduated from the University of North Carolina in 1905 and moved to Hartsville to work for his uncle at Carolina Fiber Company. Rogers gradually took responsibility for the business operations of the company, with his cousin James Lide Coker, Jr., (1863- 1931) in charge of engineering and production. He became president of Carolina Fiber in 1931 at the younger Coker’s death, overseeing the company’s operations during the Depression and diversifying its production to include the manufacture of nine point board, the corrugated cardboard forming the middle sheet of three-ply cardboard used in shipping boxes. He served as president of Carolina Fiber Company until ill health forced his resignation in 1939; the company merged with Sonoco Products Company in 1941. Rogers later served as president of the Carolina Paper Company in Columbia and the Fort Sumter Paper Company in Charleston. He served Hartsville in civic affairs as well, as mayor from 1921 to 1929 and as a trustee of the Hartsville school board from 1930 to 1939. (Courtesy of the SC Dept. of Archives and History)
