City Directories and History: This is the historic location of the Catholic Hill Catholic Church.
“Bishop John England met at the home of John Kennedy at Ashepoo on January 30, 1831, to assist Irish-Catholic settlers. The three districts of Colleton, Beaufort and Barnwell were combined to form an ecclesiastical territory. A frame building 50 feet by 28 feet was dedicated on December 10, 1832, as the Church of St. James the Greater. The land on which the church was built was donated by the family of the late Dr. Robert Pringle. On April 12, 1856, St. James was destroyed in a woods fire. The church at Catholic Hill Crossroads was not rebuilt until 1894, at which time there were 60 or 70 Catholics in the vicinity. Most of the Catholics were former slaves, or their descendants, from the large plantations in the area.
The structure dedicated on January 21, 1894, is of frame construction with a shingled exterior. An arched entrance is located in a projecting bell tower with an open belfry.”
