City Directories and History: WILLIAM LEBBY HOUSE
Constructed 1847-48
“William Lebby, an engineer and machinist, acquired this burned-over lot in 1847 and was living on the site by 1849. Perhaps the most unusual dwelling in Ansonborough, the house follows the typical side-hall plan, but its double L-shape permitted the insertion of a piazza behind the front sitting room, which opened up communication to rear service areas of the house. The surmounting modillioned brick pediment and the front door architrave are typical Greek Revival features. Lebby probably had the cast-iron front fence with Rococo Revival elements installed in the 1850s.”
