City Directories and History: VIGILANT FIRE INSURANCE COMPANY – Constructed circa 1882; rehabilitated 1980-81
No. 41 State Street was built by Moses Goldsmith to house the offices of the Vigilant Fire Insurance Company. The building retains its original storefront windows and their surmounting cornice on the brick ground floor. Although the triple-tiered piazzas on the south side were removed many years ago, a cantilevered two-story enclosure, built to provide needed bath-rooms, remains. New owners completed an extensive rehabilitation of the house in 1981, including a contemporary rear kitchen wing.
