City Directories and History: The home of the Banana Republic Store in 2015. This was for years the J.R. Read (1831 – 1911), Company location, operating under the name of J.R. Read Dry Goods Company, business location. Later in the 1870s, J.R. Read was located at #263 King Street.
In 1916, the building was remodeled according to plans drawn by Charleston architect David B. Hyer. The improvements were executed for I. Silver & Bros. and included the construction of a three-story brick section that fronts on Beaufain Street. (“To Spend $30,000 on Store Building,” Charleston Evening Post, Feb. 24, 1916, at 9)
