The Yorkville Enquirer reported on May 5, 1870 – “The work of rebuilding Fort Sumter has begun under the supervision of Col. Ludlow, an engineer of great experience. It will retain its old shape and the outside wall will be rebuilt at a height ranging from 13 ft to 26 ft above the low water mark. The fort will house 13 heavy caliber guns, a new dock, and Sallyport are to be erected on the west side and the present dock and stairs will be removed.”
The Yorkville Enquirer reported on May 2, 1872 – “Four 15″ guns have been received at Charleston for the forts in the harbor.”
