THOMAS PINCKNEY HOUSE
Constructed circa 1783; altered and renovated mid- and late-twentieth century
“Thomas Pinckney, the founder of Charleston’s leading political family, bought this lot, with a house already built, shortly after his arrival in 1692. The original house on the site burned in 1778, and the present stuccoed brick dwelling has been dated to 1783. Stylistically similar to other post-Revolutionary houses in Charleston, particularly the Simpson house across the alley to the south, the three-story house with its low hipped roof also has a wrought-iron balcony on the second floor. Gen. Pinckney lived at 14 George Street from the 1790s on, and this served as a rental property, although he attempted to sell it to a tenant at this juncture. The house subsequently became the home and grocery store of William Porter in 1826, thus explaining the large shop window opening on the first floor.”
