City Directories and History: The freedman’s cottage at 438 Huger Street was built between 1893 and 1896 for William H. Murray. The house was, for the longest period, the home of the Evans family starting in 1929 and continuing until 1973. In the 1990s the house began a long period without occupants, and the condition of the house steadily worsened.
In the 2010s, the house was purchased by restoration contractor Marc Engelke who performed an award-winning restoration of the house. The previously enclosed one-story porch on the west facade was reopened; vinyl windows were replaced for appropriate single-pane, double-hung wood windows; the tin roof was repaired; and fake siding was removed to expose the original wood siding.
