Constructed before 1861; renovated circa 1880s
“Begun as a Charleston single house in the late-1850s by a wealthy railroad magnate, George Trenholm, this wooden structure was substantially renovated about twenty years later in the Queen Anne style by the Darby family.”

Yorkville Enquirer, Wed Eve July 13, 1864: Courier nominated George A. Trenholm
The Charleston Courier nominated Trenholm as a replacement for Memminger and the editor supported the idea. He saw Trenholm as not being a politician but a financier and successful businessman.
