City Directories and History: The historic location of the Planter’s and Mechanic’s Bank
building. The bank had a highly successful operation with capital assets of over $1 million. Bank Pres., Daniel Ravenel and Cashier, C.H. Stevens operated the bank in 1852. Others associated with the bank at that time included: Robert Martin, Wm. Aiken, Wm, Bell, Wm. Ravenel, James Lamb, A.S. Willington, Wm. Adger, J.J. McCarter, S.G. Barker, C.T. Mitchell, J.K. Robinson, Ed. P. Milliken, J.S. Tennent, Charles H. Hanckel, Jona. Bryan, Samuel Kingman, Henry Morris, R. Rhett, F.C. Prioleau, Edward McCrady, Henry Morris, and John Rosser. By 1872, A.R. Taft, Pres. and W.E. haskell, Cashier were operating the bank.
Mr. John H. Steinmeyer was involved in many businesses in Charleston. The City Directory states in 1852, he was also operating a steam saw mill on Beaufain and Wentworth Street.
