City Directories and History: Constructed circa 1790-1800 / Charleston Slave Trader
This three-story single house was owned in the late-eighteenth century by the South Carolina Society. In the nineteenth century it, like an adjoining house, was owned by the New England-born slave trader Ziba B. Oakes, who possessed a nearby slave mart at 6 Chalmers Street. Slave traders also used the Greek Revival style three- story masonry building at 15-17 State Street, constructed by William Caldwell or his predecessor before 1848.

Please enjoy this structure and all those listed in Roots and Recall. But remember each is private property. So view them from a distance or from a public area such as the sidewalk or public road.
Do you have information to share and preserve? Family, school, church, or other older photos and stories are welcome. Send them digitally through the “Share Your Story” link, so they too might be posted on Roots and Recall.
Thanks!
