This house was originally a school known for years as “The McCandless School” after its formidable headmaster, Leslie McCandless. It was moved from its original site to its present location on Laurens Street. Floor marks where teachers’ desks stood are still visible. [Courtesy of the Camden Tour Book]
This building was constructed about 1854 by the Camden School Association. A rectangular four room building with a center hall, the school was originally located across Laurens Street. Mr. and Mrs. Leslie McCandless were hired to run the school. Leslie McCandless played a significant role in the education history of Camden. He graduated from South Carolina College in 1838 and began teaching at Camden the following year at Pine Grove Academy in Camden. Between 1846 and 1854, he was associated with the Camden Orphan Society Schools. [Camden Archives and History]

Please enjoy this structure and all those listed in Roots and Recall. But remember each is private property. So view them from a distance or from a public area such as the sidewalk or public road.
Do you have information to share and preserve? Family, school, church, or other older photos and stories are welcome. Send them digitally through the “Share Your Story” link, so they too might be posted on Roots and Recall.
Thanks!
