Circa 1785 – Before Colonel John Chesnut’s house was moved from the corner of King and Fair Streets, then the heart of the town, it was the scene of an elaborate reception and banquet honoring President George Washington at the time of his visit to Camden during his
tour of the Southern States in 1791. Today, the house is frequently called the “Washington House.” Relocated to its present site in the early 1900s, it was one of the old homes which accommodated northern sportsmen and their families who wintered here as “paying guests.” It is a fine example of Colonial Georgian architecture.
