City Directories and History: 1925 – Kershaw Motor Company, 1941 – Kershaw County Court House, 1964 – County Court House ( New construction took place in 1966-67)
In 1905 the fourth Kershaw County Court House was constructed at the site of Lafayette Hall for a cost of $25,000. At the time of construction, various relics were placed in the cornerstone among which was “a Confederate currency bill of $500. dated Feb. 7, 1864 along with a portrait of Stonewall Jackson give by Dr. F. Leslie Zemp.” The building was opened on November 17, 1905 and razed in 1966 to make room for the new modern court house.
The Camden Chronicle dated Friday May 17, 1968 states that the new Court House will be opening and the ceremonies will include addresses by both Lt. Gov. John C. West and Circuit Judge John Grimball. The laying of the cornerstone will be under the direction of the Grand Lodge of Ancient Free Masons of South Carolina with William H. Grimball, the judge’s brother presiding at the ceremony. The building was designed by Ralph Little of the firm of Clark, McCall and Leach.
The original home at this location was known as Lafayette Hall, see the R&R site for the Courthouse and Lafayette Hall.
