City Directories and History: “The Tabernacle,” built by the Beaufort Baptist Church in the 1840’s, was Church Tabernacle Baptist used as a lecture room and meeting house. The frame structure with a gable and return box cornice was badly damaged by the hurricane in 1893. The to the building was done in a Carpenter Gothic style; wood buttresses spire from each of the front corners. Facade windows are in a lancet arch bell tower rising from the one-story portico that is supported by four columns.
Reverend Solomon Peck of Boston led 500 black members from the Baptist Church in September 1863. At the close of the Civil War, these bought “The Tabernacle” and organized their own church. The grave and bust of Robert Smalls (1839-1915) are in the churchyard.”
