City Directories and History: “John Joyner Smith (1790-1872) built this house ca. 1813. The two-story house rests on a high masonry foundation. Two-story piazzas, supported eight round columns which extend to the ground, wrap around three the building. All the windows onto the piazzas have nine over nine (9/with sidelights and open like doors for easy access. Mr. Smith married Mary Gibbes Barnwell on May 27, 1813. The couple not agree on the location of the entrance. The elaborate door facing the (Bay Street) is false. The real entrance, a recessed door framed by Ionic columns, is on Wilmington Street.
John Joyner Smith had two plantations, Old Fort on the Beaufort River Blue Mud in St. Peter’s Parish. During the Civil War this house served Hospital Number 9.”
