City Directories and History: “Auldbrass Plantation was designed and built by Frank Lloyd Wright, one of America’s foremost modern architects, during the period between 1940 and 1951. The main house is a long structure with slanting exterior walls of native cypress lumber laid at 80-degree angles and held by brass screws. The slant of the walls reflects the slant of the surrounding oak trees (70 to 80 degrees from the ground). Clerestory windows of original Indian arrow motif circle the main house and the gate house. Linked together to form one working complex are the main house, gate house, manager’s office and living quarters, stables, kennels and two caretaker houses.
It was Mr. Wright who modified the plantation name of “Old Brass,” which had appeared on land deeds as early as 1859, to the present spelling, Auldbrass. ”
