City Directories and History: “Tidalholm” was built ca. 1853 by Edgar Fripp, a prominent sea island planter. The house, built high off the ground, was
originally in the Italianate style of the Victorian Period. During the storm of 1893, however, the second-floor roof was blown off and was replaced with a second-floor verandah and a gable roof, making it look more like the Beaufort style. Windows are six over six (6/6) lights with exterior blinds. Square columns support the porches.
“Tidalholm” was used as a guest house from the 1930’s until 1974, when it was restored as a private residence. The home was used in the filming of a major motion picture, “The Great Santini,” in 1978.”
