City Directories and History: Brothers A.R. Campbell and J.D. Campbell built homes on South Main Street in Belton, S.C.

I’ve researched the Campbell family that built the house. I have all the census records up til 1940 of course. Miss Marie Campbell-Ballentine died in 1977. She was the last surviving child/daughter of A.R. Campbell and was about 100 years old. Since then the house was auctioned to Mary Banister and her husband. He died while they were renovating the house. I have not been able to contact her regarding photos or changes to the house. She sold the house to a corporation that opened an Antiques Store. I

have the signage from that enterprise. They pretty much used the house until the repairs would be more than profitable, so the house went back to the bank. I bought the house as a foreclosure, so you might say I am the third family to own the house. I have one Sanborn map with the house on it (1922). The other Belton maps are missing. I have been to the Belton Museum to search their files, but they are very unorganized, so it is a ongoing struggle. I have been going through the records online from Chronicling America and have gotten to about 1891. It’s very time consuming with little results. Most of the articles are about who’s visiting who, and events pertaining to the people and not the house. I did run across an article in the early 1890’s that stated the Campbell brothers

wanted to build a Cotton Mill/Ginery between the two houses. There is evidence of this behind the house next door. I’ve attached a photo of the J.D. Campbell house that will be torn down when the property sells, and other various photos of my house before I purchased it. It is such a shame and I am trying to get some salvage rights for the materials that I need to restore my home. If you do have time to stop, I will welcome the opportunity to show you what I have gathered, and of course give you a tour.
