The Downtown Anderson Historic District has added information on the city’s heritage and this building. Once used as the Brown – Osborne Co., building as well as later that of the Fleishman Store.
***Fleishman Dept. Stores operated in about fifteen locations, most across the southeastern U.S. Mr. Fleishman states, “My father held a Christmas party for 200-300 black children on the second floor of the Elk’s Club each years, where the Anderson Co. Library now stands.” – See Alvin T. Fleishman’s Recollections, this page for an excellent history of the company, family, and Anderson history. A few references included in his history are: Leon Harris (Attorney), Elks Club, Uncle Phillip Klein, Anderson Country Club, history of the Anderson Square, Bleckley Estate (Annie Means and Mrs. Zoe Maxwell),
Mr. Holman reflects also on other key history points related to the site. These include that a Tavern on the Square was located where the Bleckley Building – Fleishman & Bros., stood. It was at this tavern, the Bobby Norris (who lived on the Abbeville Rd.,) suggested this location for the Anderson Courthouse. In an additional recollection from the Fleishman family, they recalled having purchased the Bleckley property from to heirs: Annie Means and Mrs. Zoe Maxwell.
