City Directories and History: This block of handsome two-story brick stores is a fitting memorial to George W. Croft, one of the town’s most distinguished prominent citizens who was a lawyer and later a U.S. Congressman during the late 1800’s. One of George Croft’s crowning achievements was sponsoring legislation in the General Assembly to prohibit child labor in South Carolina cotton mills in the late 19th century.
