City Directories and History: Our house was built in 1928 by McGhee and McGhee, African – American contractors out of Aiken, S.C. They worked with architect, Mr. Willis Irvin on many of his projects. The home was built for Fritz Schulhoffus. Permit number 146 states that it had 11 rooms and 3 bath rooms as cost $12,000 to build. (Information contributed by Deedee Vaughters – 9.8.17)
African American building company owners, McGhee & McGhee (cousins William M. McGhee, Jr., and Albert B. McGhee), constructed substantial buildings throughout Aiken, S.C. The McGhee’s were originally from Greenwood but moved to Aiken about 1904 and as stated elsewhere often worked with Willis Irvin on construction projects. (Information from SCDAH 4.4.22 via Mr. Wm.
