MARTIN MINE:\u00a0<\/b>The Yorkville Enquirer <\/i>reported in the 1850’s that a twenty-eight pound nugget of gold was found in the Martin Mine in Smyrna, S.C.\u00a0 This caused a minor gold rush compared to California\u2019s but a major one in York County.\u00a0 There was a couple of errors in the story.\u00a0 First, York County does not have the type of gold found in nuggets but placer gold.\u00a0 Secondly, it was the newspaper created the story as a gag.\u00a0 The story was so good some people in the 1990’s still believed it.\u00a0 Over the years it was said that the nugget, was sent to the Smithsonian Museum, which had come into existence only four or five years before the Enquirer<\/i> conjured up the story, and it is doubtful if many in York County had heard anything of the museum.<\/p>\n
