Taylor is planning to erect a large storehouse there to conduct a general mercantile business.\u00a0 The PO has been requested to establish a new PO there.&#8221;<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p>The Yorkville Enquirer reported Feb. 20, 1889 &#8211; <span style=\"color: #76232f;\"><em>&#8220;A new post office to be known as Newport has been established on the 3 D&#8217;s Railroad between Yorkville and Rock Hill and W.H. Taylor has been appointed Postmaster.&#8221;<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>City Directories and History:<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0\u00a0Walker&#8217;s 1910 Postal Route map is an invaluable tool in tracking historical locations in York County&#8217;s early 20th century rural communities. Each section is tagged with the names associated with that particular area. Be sure to open the <span style=\"color: #76232f;\"><strong>MORE INFORMATION\/ ENLARGEABLE MAP\u00a0<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0link for the enlargeable PDF map which users can easily study.<\/p>\n<p>In many cases, these same locations, have also been linked directly to the R&amp;R &#8220;other&#8221; pages, associated with the individual names, and sites on the maps. \u00a0To return to the master index list, click <span style=\"color: #76232f;\"><a style=\"color: #76232f;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rootsandrecall.com\/york-county-sc\/buildings\/walkers-map-of-york-county-index\/\"><strong>HOME<\/strong><\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>On July 16, 1890 the YV Enquirer reported &#8211; &#8220;Mr. Joseph Miller will soon build a warehouse, Mr. Leonard Wood of Clay Hill is in Newport making arrangements for a residence and storehouse, and Mr. Taylor will begin making brick.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The YV Enquirer reported on Jan. 13, 1892 &#8211; &#8220;The handsome dwelling of Rev. J.M. McClain on Park Street in Newport is nearing completion.&#8221; Also, &#8220;J.J. Choat and his family have moved from Rock Hill to Newport.&#8221; &#8211; &#8221; The Rev. J.N. Isom have also moved to Newport.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The YV Enquirer also reported on Jan. 13, 1892 &#8211; &#8220;School will start soon at the Belmont Academy under Ms. Lillie Ratchford.\u00a0 Ms. Kate Ratchford will also commence a school at Newport.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Herald reported on Sept. 30, 1896 &#8211;<span style=\"color: #76232f;\"> &#8220;J.C. Wilborn (Wilburn), of Ebenezer is having a new roof put on his house.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The Rock Hill Herald reported on May 24, 1899 &#8211; &#8220;Mr. J.R. Neistler will erect a ginnery at Newport.\u00a0 It will be supplied with two seventy saw gins.\u00a0 He will continue to run his Rock Hill gin, which is supplied with four sixty saw gins.&#8221; (This old gin was constructed on the corner of Hands Mill Road #274 at the railroad crossing and stood well into the mid 20th century.)<\/p>\n<p>The Herald reported on Oct. 13, 1900 &#8211; &#8220;Mr. Edgar Jackson, who about ten days ago had both his hands caught in the gin saw at Neely and Miller&#8217;s gin at Newport, was fortunate to keep both hands.\u00a0 The left hand was seriously injured while the right is less hurt.\u00a0 He has nearly recovered use of both.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Herald reported on June 4, 1902 &#8211; That thieves attached Mr. Sam Barron last Saturday. He has two stores, one at his home, and the other near the dam of the Catawba Power Company.<\/p>\n<p>The Herald reported on Nov. 26, 1902 &#8211; &#8220;S. E. Barron is now in charge of the Belmont School, which has a large attendance.\u00a0 He is boarding at the home of M.B. Massey.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Herald reported on Dec. 13, 1902 &#8211; &#8220;M.B. Massey, J. H. Barnett and J.H. McCoy are opening a general merchandise store in the Belmont section of the county.\u00a0 It is now the residence of Sam Barron.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The RH Record reported on Nov. 12, 1908 &#8211; &#8220;The PO at Newport has been discontinued, and the former patrons of that office are now being served by rural carriers.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The RH Record reported on July 29, 1909 &#8211; &#8220;Congressman Finley has had a new post office established at Newport, with Ms. Mary Jackson as Postmaster.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Herald reported on June 2, 1916 &#8211; &#8220;Mr. Joe M.
