City Directories and History: The Wilkerson family emerged as one of the most important financially and socially prominent families in the post Civil War era of Western York County. They were into farming, milling, molasses manufacturing, supply sales and insurance. The Wilkerson’s operated their mercantile business from these stores.
The Yorkville Enquirer of Nov. 6, 1906 contained an ad for J.S. Wilkerson and Co., general merchandise in Hickory Grove, S.C.
