City Directories and History: The historic Sturgis farm was originally south east of the Heckle Blvd., and Highway 322 intersections. The Sturgis family, was one of the early settlers in York County and when the family sold the farm many of their collections were also distributed. One of the finest items in the home was a magnificent walnut corner cupboard which was sold to the York County Historical Commission for display and preservation at Historic Brattonsville.
This tract of land was part of the original land owned by George Sturgis just west of Rock Hill, S.C. See it on the attached linked page to Mayhugh’s Heritage maps.
The Herald reported on Oct. 22, 1902 – “Roach and Sturgis have begun a grocery business and their store is on the old York Road, near the residence of Clarence Wylie.” (Location unknown but feel the business is associated with the Sturgis Family at this location.)
