City Directories and History: The rocky hill for which Rock Hill was named sat along the edge of the railroad bed and was one of the highest points on the Charlotte and Augusta Railroad when it was constructed in the early 1850’s. For decades traffic coming from downtown Rock Hill, that is from Main Street, had to cross the railroad lines on Blacks Street and then go north on Chatham Avenue to the depot which was on the west side of the tracks.
As late as the 1960’s the hill remained at the intersections of East Main and Trade Streets, a popular “jumping off” spot, which if the vehicle you were riding in was going a little to fast, passengers were left with the feeling you had just been on a roller coaster ride.
