City Directories and History: This fine old Carolina “I” house was demolished in the 1990’s. The Western York County Gazetteer wrote: MUSKET HILL: About a mile south of Sharon on Highway 49 is a short dirt road marked as “Musket Hill”. This name, given by the county when all roads and highways were being marked, and undoubtedly by some family that had moved into the area and misunderstood the true pronunciation (perhaps the Goss family). The historically proper name is “Muster Hill”; deriving its name from a Civil War mustering ground at the top of the hill. The name, from time to time, has been misunderstood, even by those who lived in the area. Miss Helen Kennedy tells that when she was told her family was going to visit another family on Muster Hill, she though they said, “Mustard Hill.” She was very confused when she and her family arrived at the house they were visiting; she had expected to see great fields of mustard greens.
Normally the local men assembled on the muster fields or grounds about once a week for drill and rifle practice. For a General Muster companies from the surrounding area would join in with the drills which lasted a week or ten days. At these times the men camped in tents or covered wagons and even buggies. Some of the men brought a slave, called a “wait man”, to tend to the stock, do the cooking and other menial chores for their masters. Often the musters became a grand time for the men to get together, drink, play cards and generally enjoy the company of other men.
