R&R related history: The Hutchison collection contains a letter from Moses A. Faris (Feris) to David Hutchison dated March 17, 1818 from Bath County, Kentucky. It describes his service in the War of 1812 and describes a defeat under Gen. J. G. Winchester. Bath County is in northeast Kentucky and was formed in 1811 as a division of Montgomery County. The relationship between Moses Faris and David Hutchison is not known.
I believe that this refers to the Battle at River Raisin in Michigan. James Winchester (1752-1826) served in the Revolutionary War as an officer. He was wounded and captured at Staten Island in Ney York, released and sent south. He was captured again at the surrender of Charleston. He was released and served the rest of the war under Nathaniel Green. During the War of 1812, Winchester became a Brigadier General in 1812. During action between January 18 and January 23, 1813, Winchester was leading troops near the Great Lakes. He camped at Maumee Rapids and dispatched a contingent of troops to Frenchtown to attack a British fort. The British were driven from Frenchtown, but were reinforced and attacked Winchester’s forces on January 22. Winchester, who was outmanned 1,400 to 900, was trapped with the Raisin River to his rear. His forces were mostly Kentucky volunteers and the 17th US Infantry. The British prevailed, Winchester was defeated and most of his men surrendered or fled the field. Many of the wounded were left on the battlefield, and the next day Wyandot warriors allied with the British killed many of the remaining American wounded. Raisin River was considered by many a massacre. Today, the battle is a National Park Service site. It appears that Moses Faris was present at Raisin River.
