The Herald reported on Nov. 5, 1885 – “Kimbrell and Frew have sold their stock and vehicles to J.E. Poag and T.L. Johnston. The new owners plan on making some improvements to the stables. Mr. Kimbrell will continue in charge of the business.”
On March 13, 1889 the Yorkville Enquirer reported – “Mr. J. Edgar Poag began work on his livery stable last week. It is situated on Main Street and is a two story building which is 150 ft long and 36 feet wide.” On May 22, 1889 the paper reported, “Mr. J. E. Poag’s livery and sales stable is now complete. It is one of the largest and best arranged stables in upper S.C.”
City Directories and History: The Herald reported on May 23, 1889 – “J. E. Poag’s Exchange Stable has been completed and he expects to move into it this week. This is pronounced one of the largest, most convenient, and attractive stables in the state.” (The YV Enquirer reported earlier on March 13, 1889 – “Mr. J. Edgar Poag began work on his new livery stable, situated on Main Street and will be a two story building 150 ft long and 36 ft wide.”)
The Charleston News and Courier of June 7, 1890 stated – “The sale of livestock has become one of the fixed industries of this place. There are four livery stables in this town. They are owned by J. Edgar Poag, John Ratterree, Heath and Kimball, and A. Friedheim and Brothers. The livery stable of J. Edward Poag is by far the handsomest in the upper section of S.C. The other stables are well appointed and conveniently situated and accordingly do a very good business. ”
The Yorkville Enquirer reported on Feb. 3, 1892 – “J.E. Poag has gone to New York and may stay there.”
The Herald reported on Jan. 5, 1901 – “Julia Friedheim is placing materials on the lot on Main St., where once stood the Poag’s Livestock Exchange. He will erect a brick stable for Walter Kerr.”
