The YV Enquirer reported on March 7, 1894 – “Ms. Mary Harold is teaching school at Hopewell and Ms. Mary Allison is teaching at Mr. W.S. Wilkerson’s school.”
City Directories and History: The Hopewell School located on Hopewell Road opened in 1925 and operated until the beginning of the Second World War. The Craftsman style reflected in this building was extremely popular throughout the country and particularly in the South during the 1920s and 1930s. In 1941, the school closed. The building features a front cross gable, brackets among the porch details, triangular knee braces, and exposed rafter tails. The style, constructed of brick, is not commonly found in this region. The new replacement school building (pictured) is presently used as a community center and hosts the annual Hopewell Singing and Hash celebration. [Historical Properties of York County, SC – 1995]
The Yorkville Enquirer of July 18, 1896 reported that the Hopewell School has opened with Prof. Will G. Ward as principal.
