STOOPING PINE: This African-Methodist church is located about 3 miles from Hickory Grove on the Old Smyrna Road and originally had a school conducted there. The church was moved across the road from the original site at some point. Galilee, Young’s Grove, Albert’s Chaple and Dunton all had their beginning in at Stooping Pine.
SUMTER’S CAMP: On the 10 October 1780, a few days after the battle at Kings Mountain, Sumter, Lacey and Hill retired to this unknown site somewhere on Bullock’s Creek.
TAYLOR’S WOODS: The only reference to this site somewhere near Hickory Grove was mentioned in a December 1922 issue of the Yorkville Enquirer. Supposedly a man by the name of Taylor hanged himself in these woods some years before the 1922 reference (perhaps as early as 1870). Later the woods got the reputation of being haunted. In 1922 a white man said while ‘possum hunting his dogs treed something and when he went to see, he saw a man standing on a limb above him. He related that although he had to cross two ten-rail fences, he still got home before the dogs arrived.
