City Directories and History: The Crawford family lived on what is today the Kings Mountain State Park bordering both Cherokee and York Counties, S.C. The family was intermarried with the Caveny family and members of the extended group quarried stone for building and a prolific tombstone operation at what is today Lake Crawford. Hundreds of tombstones throughout the region are either signed or attributable to the Caveny – Crawford shop.
Melvin Ware wrote and contributed the following to R&R on 10.16.14 – “David R. Crawford of Gastonia, NC, who is a direct descendant of James and Martha Crawford. Some years ago, David took me to a cabin site, located in what is now the Kings Mountain SC State Park, which his dad had told him was the original home of James and Martha Hair Crawford. When he was young, David’s dad helped farm the land in the vicinity of the cabin before it was incorporated into the State Park and he apparently knew the area very well. His knowledge of the cabin’s history was supposedly passed down from his elders and family members. David also sent me a copy of a land plat given to him by his dad showing sub-division of a tract containing approximately 915 acres, which his dad said was part of the original James Crawford grant. This plat depicts a structure located between two creeks and beside a roadway and which is presumed to be the Crawford cabin. Below that is shown another structure and what appears to be a mill pond on the smaller of the two creeks. The location of the cabin site we visited seems consistent with the creeks, road and structure shown on the plat. Unfortunately, there are no dates or references on the plat itself that would explain its origin. Hopefully, through a study of early land records at the York County Register of Deeds Office, it may be possible to verify this family story.”
