City Directories and History: The historic Coon Hill school was originally used as a rural school for children west of Hickory Grove, named for a hill on the edge of the Buice farm. It was an African American school and is recognized
prominently in local history as serving that purpose. The building pictured, is reported to have been constructed in circa 1939 with timber cut from the Buice family farm. Wells Buice was the carpenter-contractor who constructed the school for students to attend from his own farm as well as the neighborhood and the region. The school remains standing in remarkable condition in 2014. However, an earlier structure and school was located and called Coon Hill African American School as early as 1893. See PDG of school in York County, this page!
The building was constructed in much the same manner as “Rosenwald” plan schools throughout York County. However, there is no record to suggest the Rosenwald Foundation or state support was provided for this rural school. The building was heated by a wood stove that sat at the rear of the rectangular structure.
*** The exact location of this school is not provided due to the request of the property owners.
