City Directories and History: The RH Herald reported on Nov. 21, 1916 – “The county commission has decided to locate a new bridge over the Catawba River at the point where Cherry Road touches the river bank.”
The RH Herald on Aug. 14, 1940 reported – “The temporary wooden bridge over the Catawba River on the Rock Hill – Fort Mill Highway has been washed away by floods. It was being used during construction of a new bridge across the river.”
The Herald reported on July 12, 1941 – “Traffic began moving this afternoon over the new Catawba River Bridge on the Rock Hill – Fort Mill road. It has been named the Spratt Memorial Bridge for Thomas B. Spratt of Fort Mill.”
On July 3, 1941 the Herald reported – “A celebration will be held to mark the completion of the Spratt Memorial Bridge across the Catawba River. Officials are preparing parking near the bridge for 3,000 cars. The Govs of NC, SC, Tenn., and Ga., have been invited.”
