Canaan Methodist church is reported to have been meeting as early as 1812. The first church constructed of logs was built about 1820 (20-40 ft). Later a frame church was built in 1859 which served the area for about one hundred years before it was demolished to build the current brick church in 1952. It is reported that the church sits atop of an old defunct gold mine.
The A.W. Love family was highly active and Mr. Love had been responsible for collecting much of the church history.
