BETHANY POST OFFICE: Established in 1851 near the present-day Bethany ARP Church community. William McGill, Jr. was its first Postmaster.
The Yorkville Enquirer reported on Feb. 23, 1871 – “The barn of Mr. Samuel McCarter near Bethany was burned, killing several calves. His smoke house was broken into and meat was stollen.”

The Yorkville Enquirer reported on Jan. 1, 1890 – “Mr. James H. Quinn of Clarks Fork will soon occupy the Joel McCarter place one mile west of Bethan. Also, Mr. D.T. Partlow has moved from Bethel and has bought the place formerly owned by Rev. W.Y. Love.”
The Yorkville Enquirer of Nov. 11, 1891 reported, “The cotton house and corn crib of Mr. I.C. Caveny, who lives seven miles NW of Yorkville, were destroyed by fire. He lost two bales of seed cotton and two hundred bushels in the shuck.”
The Enquirer reported on March 29, 1895 – “Final examinations for the term were held on March 22 at the S.C. Ratterree School at Bethany. This was an all day event at which Mr. Ratterree questioned his students in spelling, reading, geography, and arithmetic.”
