A previous effort at beginning an African American insurance company was started earlier in Rock Hill. The Herald reported on July 21, 1897 – “The latest local enterprise, and a very commendably one it is, is a life insurance company for African American men exclusively. At the present rates of insurance and under the existing circumstances it is impossible for the average man of color to take insurance. The incorporates are; J. H. Toole, Rev. W. M. Alexander, Rev. C. M. Young, Rev. M. P. Hall, and M. D. Lee. These men have filled an application for a charter. J. Henry Toole is the principle behind the business.”
