City Directories and History: Winthrop University began as Winthrop Normal and Industrial Institute in Columbia, SC, and moved to Rock Hill in the early 1890’s. The first buildings were constructed in 1895-96.

The Herald on April 11, 1942 reported – “A new residence hall for Seniors is being built on the Winthrop College Campus. It is near Joins Hall and faces Oakland Avenue. This will be the sixth residence hall in order of construction, they are: Margaret Nance 1895, D.W. McLaurin 1901, Bancroft Hall 1909, and “Originally called Johnson Hall“, Roddey Hall 1920, (Named for W.J. Roddey, long-term Board Member), and Breazeale Hall 1924-31, (Named for J.E. Breazeale of Anderson, a charter board member).”
