City Directories and History: John H. Wylie built this home on Wylie Avenue in Hickory Grove about 1870. Wylie’s daughter, Eva, later married Dr. Walter F. McGill who practiced dentistry in the town for many years.
The rear section of the house is a hall and parlor style home and is of earlier construction than the main part of the house which is a double A-type, I-House, built circa 1890. There is decorative woodwork in the pediments and window caps as well as decorative brackets. [Historical Properties of York County, SC – 1995]
This type architecture was very commonly used throughout western York County during the late 19th century. The use of multiple roof gables on the front facade became so popular the town of Sharon could boast of nearly a dozen such architectural forms.
