The Rock Hill Record of March 1, 1909 reported, “Mr. and Mrs. L.A. Pope recently had the misfortune of loosing their home on East Main Street to a fire. Presently they are residing on Spring Street and hope to build a new home soon.”
This was the lovely home of the J.E. Marshall family. Mrs. Marshall, was the daughter of local business mogul, Arnold Friedheim who lived at 306 East Main Street – the owner and manager of the Friedheim’s Dept. Store and other business locations throughout York County. Mr. J.E. Marshall was an early investor in farms, livestock, oil, and hardware businesses. One of the most successful was the Marshall Oil Company with headquarters on West Main Street.
The Marshalls had four children and raised them at this home. The Marshall family was originally from Charleston, S.C. and had lived at #60 Meeting Street. Following the Civil War J.E. Marshall moved to Gold Hill Road in Fort Mill, S.C., prior to his marriage to Fannie Friedheim, subsequently moving to Rock Hill.
