The Herald reported on Oct. 21, 1896 – “We have quit a number of meat dealers in town now. V. B. McFadden, John Mallard, J. C. Lindsay, and W. M. Steele all have meat markets, and S. Chaplin and John C. White sell from wagons regularly.”
The Herald on Nov. 16, 1901 contained an ad for an auction of lots, on East Main St., adjoining the property of Mrs. S. Chaplin. The lots extend from Main to Black Street with the lots fronting Main Street measuring 100′ – 200′ and the ones fronting Black Street measuring 100′ wide by 150′ deep. The auction will be held on Dec. 10, by Edgar E. Poag.
