The history of the Catawba Post Office was written by the long-term Postmaster, Dorothy Faris Whiteside, when a new post office was constructed, in the early 1960’s. She has shared this wonderful information and her drawings for R&R’s users.
The Rock Hill Herald reported on Nov. 25, 1886 – “A number of negroes living in the Cureton’s Ferry area of York County are said to be anxious to go to Liberia, and some are making preparations to leave.”
The Yorkville Enquirer of June 26, 1889 reported – “Close to Catawba Junction, a merchant of Rock Hill has built a school at a cost to himself of $600.”
The Herald reported on Nov. 25, 1896 – “The Catawba School House was destroyed by fire Thursday night. Mr. W. R. Wherry, who lives near by, was awakened about 1 a.m. and discovered the fire. The loss is about $300. and there is no insurance. The school will be rebuilt.”
