City Directories and History: The historic Maloney house was constructed in circa 1910 in an architectural form routinely seen throughout the rural sections of York County. It was a simplified Queen Anne design that served as a comfortable and cost effective home for rural farmers struggling to make ends meet on lands that had long before been exhausted by decades of cotton production.
The Maloney home at 4530 Lockhart road does not show on the Walker map of 1910 but there are two Maloney homes that do show within walking distance of this home.
The Maloney house at the corner of 49 and Hord Road was built by Edward Ross Maloney (July 14, 1880 – Aug 8, 1949) in 1910. He married Mary Palmer 21 Dec 1904. He was a member of Sharon ARP and was a member of the “Sharon Quartet” with W. A. Maloney, J. A. Maloney and Miss Iva Sherer. When the town of York applied to the state government for a state dispensary of alcoholic beverages in 1902, Ed Maloney was one of a number of men who signed a petition to persuade the town residents to vote “no.” In 1936 the local WPA visited the Maloney farm to observe a shop where he made repairs to farm equipment. His son, John Hunter Maloney, (7 Sep 1913 – 6 Mar 1987) inherited the house. John married Vennie Jones 22 Nov 1941 and served in the US Army during WWII. [Information contributed by J.L. West]
