City Directories and History: Another important member of the extended Howell family was Mr. Fred C. Howell and his wife Rose who lived at this address and whose descendants remain on part of the old Howell farm. The house was destroyed by fire in the early 1980’s and only the old home site with its old growth trees suggest the location of this home that was for many years one of only two homes on Howell Road. Mr. Fred C. Howell operated a livery and blacksmith shop, besides farming, at approximately 108 South Chatham Ave., in Rock Hill, SC. The business was near the store of C.E. Kimbrell’s at what is known as Greasy Corner.
The Fred Howell home sat approximately where the J.J. Howell house shows on Walker’s map of 1910. Note the Moore house was at the top of the ridge which is today the corner of Rhonda Drive and Howell Road.
*** The address is approximate.
