City Directories and History: 1908 – D.L. McDonald @ (#512), 1917 – David L. McDonald and Anna G. McDonald (Manager of RH Ice and Coal Co.), 1926 – D.C. McDowell, 1936/38 – Marvin M. Wilkes (M.M. Wilkes), 1959 – Greene Funeral Home, Greene Flower Shop
The McElwee Store journal of 1915 list the McDonalds as account holders at the store.
One of the earliest residence of this house, in 1917, was David L. McDonald and his wife Anna, the Manager at the Rock Hill Ice and Coal Company. The Robbins – White History Tour states, “the imposing house of Mr. and Mrs. D. L. McDonald. Mr. McDonald owned and operated the Rock Hill Ice & Coal Company. One of the attractive features of this house is the beautiful mahogany woodwork in the main rooms of the first floor. This building has been the Greene Funeral Home for many years.”
This was the long-term funeral home owned and operated by several firms including Wolfe-Todd, Wolfe and Greene and later under well known and loved, Mr. Toy Greene as the Greene Funeral Home of Rock Hill, S.C.
Local businessman Hal Todd of Rock Hill recalls living here when his father was the owner of Wolfe – Todd Funeral Home in the 1950’s. The family lived on the second floor and the business was operated from the first. Until purchasing the funeral home, Mr. Greene had worked for Reid and Sons in downtown Rock Hill which was one of the areas largest furniture companies, where coffins were also sold. Clearly the evolution of the funeral service business has changed dramatically in the past century.
In May of 2014, Pamela McAllister Bryant wrote on R&R’s FB page: “My Uncle John Tarleton lived at the funeral home when he worked for Mr. Greene in the 40’s. He also drove the ambulance and had stories to tell.”
