The Rock Hill Telephone Co., has been located at numerous sites across Rock Hill but in the mid 20th century it was on Elk Avenue. Courtesy of the Tucker Collection
The Rock Hill Record on May 6th, 1907 – “J. J. Keller, the contractor, is having lumber placed on the lot of J. Ed Reid on East Main Street, preparing to build and handsome residence.”
The Rock Hill Record reported on July 18, 1907 – “Mr. J. Ed Reid is having a beautiful house built on East Main Street.”
the Herald reported on June 21, 1916 – “Mr. Julian B. Johnson and I.V. Cauthen of the Lodge of Elks announed today that a handsome Elk’s Home will be built on Caldwell Street. The home will include an uptodate hotel. The lot has a frontage of 97 ft., on Caldwell and 100 ft., on White Street extending to an alley. The cost is estimated at $50,000.” A committee to raise funds is composed of: W.G. Stevens, J.W. O’Neal, J.C. Cauthen, D.C. Johnston, Alexander Long, C.L. Cobb, W.R. Timmons, George A. Beach, and V.Q. Hambright.
The Herald reported on Feb. 5, 1940 – “The RH Lodge of Elks has purchased the two story residence at #344 East Main Street formerly owned by Mrs. J. Ed Reid. The present Elks Lodge on Caldwell Street will be subleased. The house on Main Street (Reid Home), has ten large rooms, three baths, and a kitchen.”
The McElwee Store ledger of 1915 states that J. Edwin Reid and wife Mayme C. (W.G. Reid and Son), hold an account at the store.
In the spring of 2021, the old Elk’s Club building on East Main Street was demolished to make room for the expansion of Comporium Communication’s business facilities.
